Microsoft Purview Is Expanding Beyond Microsoft 365
One of the more important Microsoft Purview announcements this summer is MC1449180, which extends Purview DLP and auto-labeling to non-Microsoft applications.
As the Purview portal screenshot below shows, Microsoft is now bringing third-party platforms such as Box, Google Workspace, Dropbox and Salesforce into the same policy location experience as Exchange, SharePoint and OneDrive.
Purview policy locations now include supported non-Microsoft applications alongside Microsoft 365 workloads.
Purview DLP is expanding to Google Workspace, Box, Dropbox, Salesforce, ServiceNow, AWS and Cisco Webex, while auto-labelling initially supports Google Workspace and Box. It is important to note that the applications shown in the portal do not all support the same policy conditions or actions.
This means organizations can start applying a more consistent data security and classification approach beyond Microsoft 365, instead of managing completely separate controls for every SaaS platform.
The architecture is also moving in the right direction: Defender for Cloud Apps provides the connectivity to these third–party applications, while Purviewincreasingly becomes the place where DLP and auto–labeling policies are created and managed.
There are some practical considerations. Organizations need the required Enterprise– tier Microsoft Purview licensing, and protection of non–Microsoft data uses the Purview At Rest Protection pay–as–you–go model. Microsoft also warns against running equivalent Defender for Cloud Apps file policies and Purview policies for the same locations at the same time.
The most important point with these new features is that Purview is increasingly moving beyond Microsoft 365 toward becoming a broader enterprise data security platform.
As data is increasingly used by Copilots, AI agents and enterprise search across different platforms, having a consistent classification and protection framework becomes even more important.
